Are you ready to challenge your students with a full day of STEM? Do you want to explore multiple STEM disciplines while experiencing GSSM’s unique learning community? Visit our campus for a STEM Day at GSSM!

A STEM Day at GSSM offers hands-on STEM learning experiences for third through tenth grade students on GSSM’s campus. During their visit, students in grades 3 through 10 will explore and participate in two classes filled with inquiry-driven activities and projects related to STEAM topics, including engineering, chemistry, physics, and more. GSSM will provide lunch for all students in the GSSM Dining Hall. Current GSSM Student Ambassadors will lead visiting school groups in a tour of the campus. This one-day experience can be scheduled from 9 am – 1 pm or 10 am – 2 pm.

What to Expect from STEM Day at GSSM

  • For grades 3-10, multiple sessions of hands-on STEM labs in engineering, chemistry, physics, and more.
  • Opportunities to connect with GSSM residential students who will lead a tour of our campus.
  • Lunch will be provided in the GSSM Dining Hall at no cost.

Is there a fee to participate in this program?

No, STEM Days at GSSM STEAM lessons, tour of GSSM, and lunch in GSSM’s dining hall for participants are offered free to SC public schools.

What grade levels does STEM Days at GSSM serve?

STEAM lesson visits offered tat STEM Days at GSSM are available for students in grades 3 through 10. Not every lesson is suitable for every grade level due to differences in curriculum standards and understanding. However, some lessons may be adaptable for multiple grade levels. A link to current lessons and the recommended grade levels are outlined in our course catalogue.

What is the time frame for STEM Days at GSSM?

The STEM Days at GSSM team is available to provide in-person STEAM lessons for visits throughout the school year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Monday and Friday visits may be available to meet the unique scheduling needs of your school. STEM Days at GSSM typically last from 9 am – 1 pm or 10 am – 2 pm. Please note that STEM Days at GSSM visits will be scheduled to start no earlier than 9:00 am and no later than 10:00 am and are meant for delivery during normal school hours.

How long are the lessons?

Most of our STEAM lessons last for one hour. Some lessons may be a bit longer.

How many lessons are provided in STEM Days at GSSM?

Two-hour-long STEAM lessons of your choice will be provided for STEM Days at GSSM, but late arrival and early departure will impact the length of the lessons.

How many students can we bring to STEM Days at GSSM?

STEM Days at GSSM can serve a maximum of 45 students per event.

Does my school need to provide teachers or chaperones for STEM Days at GSSM visits?

Yes. While GSSM instructional staff will lead the lesson, we do request that students be accompanied by at least one familiar adult during their STEAM experience. We recommend one chaperone to every 15 students. Interested teachers, administrators, or parent volunteers are all welcome to join the fun!
