GSSM Extends Summer Research Opportunity to Rising High School Seniors Across the State
January 19, 2010
The Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is a statewide outreach program designed to pair academically talented high school students with scientist mentors in research laboratories across the state for a six-week, hands-on internship. Fields of research include medicine, computer science, engineering, microbiology, nanotechnology and more.
SPRI is a graduation requirement for all GSSM students, but non-GSSM students from other public, private or home school settings are encouraged to apply. Non-GSSM students who participate are known as SPRI Scholars.
The fee for residential scholars is $2,400. Scholars will live in dorms on the campuses of the research institutes where they will conduct research. The fee for non-residential scholars is $1,200. There is a limited amount of financial assistance available.
Depending on location and scientific interest, interns conduct research at a number of institutions including the University of South Carolina, Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, Furman University and the Savannah River National Laboratory, just to name a few.
Following their six-week internship, SPRI Scholars must submit a formal abstract and present their work at the GSSM annual Research Colloquium in February 2011.
Applicants must be South Carolina residents and rising seniors at least 16 years of age by June 2010. They must have at least a B+ average and have demonstrated interest in science, computer science or mathematics. Applications must be received on or before January 27, 2010, and are available online at
www.scgssm.org/spri or by calling the GSSM Outreach Office at 843-383-3958.
Located in Hartsville, the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics is a public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors.
